There are two main types of brake fluid for bicycle disc brakes: mineral oil and DOT synthetic brake fluid.
Mineral oil is mainly made of petroleum distillates plus additives. It is highly suitable for heavier e‑bikes like mountain e‑bikes.
It does not absorb water at all (which keeps it very stable and prevents boiling point from dropping due to moisture), is very gentle on rubber and metal parts, non‑toxic and low‑irritation. It also flows well at low temperatures, remaining smooth even at −20°C to −30°C, making it ideal for riding in European winters.
DOT synthetic brake fluid is less stable by comparison. Also, if DOT fluid gets on your skin, it can cause mild irritation such as stinging or redness.
To help riders enjoy a more carefree and comfortable riding experience, all Burchda hydraulic brake e‑bike models use mineral oil, including HC26 AWD, RX80 AWD, AZ20, AZ26, RX26, etc. Excludes some models equipped with mechanical brakes. For details, please refer to the product page.
Do I need to maintain and replace the brake oil regularly?
Under normal use, the brake oil can work well for more than 2 years. However, if the oil level drops below the MIN mark, we recommend topping it up. If the brake lever feel changes noticeably—for example, becoming spongy—you should check for leaks. If air has entered the brake lines, you can also bleed the brakes to restore better lever feel.
